What is the SSC CHSL Exam?

The Staff Selection Commission conducts the SSC CHSL exam annually for recruitment in various Ministries/ Departments/Organisations of the Government of India. The full form of SSC CHSL is the Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL, 10+2) Exam for recruitment to various posts like:

Which posts are included in SSC CHSL ?

The posts under the SSC CHSL (10+2) exam include Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant, Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant, and Data Entry Operator posts. SSC will select and recommend candidates for Assistant / Clerk posts through a computer-based test, and skill test or typing test. 

Eligibility Criteria for the SSC CHSL Exam

There are 3 important eligibility criteria that a candidate must fulfill to be eligible for the SSC CHSL  exam. The 3 parameters are given below:

Nationality

A candidate must be either:

(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January 1962, to permanently settle in India, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania(Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam to permanently settle in India.

SSC CHSL Age Limit

The age limit for the SSC CHSL posts is 18-27 years. Candidates born not before 02-01-1999 and not later than 01-01-2008 are eligible to apply. Permissible relaxation in the upper age limit for different categories is as below:

Educational Qualification

For Data Entry Operator (DEO)/ DEO Grade ‘A’ in Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Ministry of Culture and Staff Selection Commission: The candidates who are planning to appear in the CHSL  exam must have passed the 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.

For LDC/JSA and DEO/DEO Grade ‘A’ (except DEOs in Department/ Ministry: 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognized Board or equivalent.

How many Attempts are allowed in SSC CHSL?

Candidates can attempt the SSC CHSL (10+2) Exam multiple times as long as they fall within the age limit, which varies by category: 

  1. General: up to 27 years
  2. OBC: up to 30 years
  3. SC/ST: up to 32 years

There is no fixed number of attempts for SSC CHSL Examination.

SSC CHSL Application Fee

• The required application fee for the General Category for SSC CHSL  is Rs. 100/-

• Exemption: No fee is required to be paid by female candidates, SC, ST, Physically Handicapped, and Ex-Servicemen candidates.

Before beginning the SSC CHSL preparation, it is important to make note of changes in the exam pattern and syllabus. The modifications to  are given below:

• SSC CHSL Tier 1 exam will be conducted in online mode.

• Introduction of a descriptive paper of 100 marks within 60 minutes in pen and paper mode.

• Reduction in the time limit for examination of Tier -I from 75 minutes to 60 minutes.

• Tier II will include Objective Multiple Choice + Skill Test & Typing Test. 

This is an objective exam that will be conducted online. There are 4 sections in the Tier 1 exam of SSC CHSL Exam, with 100 questions that account for a total of 200 marks. The subject-wise details are given below:

The tier 1 syllabus for the SSC CHSL 2 Exam includes 4 subjects, namely General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill), and English Language (Basic Knowledge). The topics to be included in the tier 1 exam in each subject are as follows-

The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially about History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy and scientific research

Important Points:

• There is negative marking in SSC CHSL  Tier 1 Exam. Giving a wrong answer to a question will lead to a penalty of 0.5 marks in all sections

• The exam duration is 75 minutes for candidates who are visually handicapped.

SSC CHSL Eligibility Criteria 

Candidates preparing for the SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) exam must verify eligibility conditions such as age, educational qualification, age relaxations, citizenship requirements, and recommendations for physically impaired candidates before applying for the SSC CHSL  exam.

SSC CHSL Tier 2 Syllabus 

SSC has revised SSC CHSL Tier 2 Exam Pattern and released the updated syllabus which has been detailed below-

Tier-II will include the following three sections, having two modules each:

Section-1: Module-I: Mathematical Abilities and Module II: Reasoning and General Intelligence.

Section-2: Module-I: English Language and Comprehension and Module-II: General Awareness

Section-3: Module-I: Computer Knowledge Test and Module-II: Skill Test/ Typing Test

Tier-2 will be conducted in two sessions - Session- 1 & Session-2, on same day. Session-I will include conducting of Section-1, Section-2 and Module-1 of Section-3. Session-2 will include conducting of Module-2 of Section-3.

Tier-2 will consist of Objective Type, Multiple choice questions, except for Module-2 of Section 3. The questions will be set in English and Hindi except for Module-2 (i.e. English Language and Comprehension module) in Section 2.

There will be negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer in Section-1, Section-2 and Module-I of Section-3.

SSC CHSL Skill Test

Skill Test for the post of DEO/ DEO Grade 'A’ in the Department/ Ministry

The speed of 15000 (Fifteen Thousand) Key Depressions per hour on a Computer will be adjudged based on the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage. The duration of the Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes and printed matter in English containing about 3700-4000 key depressions will be given to each candidate who would enter the same in the Computer. The passage to be entered into the computer may also be displayed on the computer screen.

Skill Test for the post of DEO/ DEO Grade 'A’ except in the Department/ Ministry 

Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (Eight Thousand) Key Depressions per hour on the Computer will be adjudged based on the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage. The duration of the Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes ,and printed matter in English containing about 2000-2200 key depressions will be given to each candidate who will enter the same in the Computer. The passage to be entered into the Computer may also be displayed on the computer screen.

SSC CHSL Minimum Qualifying Marks

Minimum qualifying marks in Tier-I, Section-I, Section-II & Module-I of Section-III of Tier-II Examination are as follows:

  1. UR: 30%
  2. OBC/ EWS: 25%
  3. All other categories: 20%
